AMPPP Interview With RenG Photography

Photography Name: RenG Photography
Photographer: Renée Gschaid
Where You Reside: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Can you tell us a little about your photography style? The photography style that seems to call to me is mostly a mix of dark, Goth and Victorian — sometimes going a bit medieval and Renaissance. There is something simply beautiful about photos from a time when romance and courtship reigned supreme; it’s the hopeless romantic and old soul in me.

How long have you been in the field?
Over 5 years, hard to say since almost 5 years professional studio
experience but almost 7 years freelance experience. Had to count it a few times because doesn’t seem that long ago.

What got you started?  The passion really sparked in high school with my best friend when she got me into the media club and would take photos at all the school event with the perk of getting out of class sometimes. After, really go into taking photos of friends’ bands which was a tie in from photographing the annual ‘battle of the bands’ in high school.  This really got me into darker photo since the one band was in the genre of black metal. Then got hired on a portrait studio where began to explore more into traditional photography of film and digital.

What equipment do you use? I shoot with a Canon Rebel XT along with various lens and lighting.  It’s not the equipment you use but know how to use it matters more.

What is your favorite subject to capture? Being a Gothic girl, anything that is dark really takes my eye. My biggest obsession is making photos look old like the small collection of old family photos. So tend to work with models more than anything taking great pride in setting up sets, props and staging to make the picture complete.

What does beauty mean to you? Beauty is simply something that intrigues you. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and forms. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, but what people do with that beauty is amazing. Sometimes, what seems the most unattractive, through the right eyes, is the most stunning thing in the world.  It just takes someone to see it.

Do you have any tips, tricks, advice or wisdom you would be willing to share? Don’t be afraid to shoot in locations those others may deem as weird or odd; personally that’s the graveyard. You never know what lies deep inside were other fear to tread and sometimes the most amazing photos come for this secret obscure places.
